Earlier this week, I met with my friend Emma from The Aubergine Kitchen for a much needed catch-up.

We only had an hour and our meeting place had to be somewhere near the train station. As part of my mission to experience as much of Leeds as possible and to support independent businesses, I try not to go to big chains, so I recommended Cielo, one of my new favourite coffee shops.

Cielo is “a Social Enterprise which reinvests 100% of profits back into building better community and reducing loneliness.”

According to its website:

At Cielo we believe that community is a verb, not a noun. We exist as a Social Enterprise to provide you space to connect within our community. We are driven by a passion to reduce loneliness and help us all love to live. As an added benefit we also aim to serve the nicest cakes, snacks and roast our own speciality coffee….We distribute the profits from our cafes to the local areas – supporting other local organisations with vision but not always the cash to improve the lives of those around us. And we give away profits from the roastery to international needs.

Good intentions aren’t enough though if your product isn’t up-to-scratch. Cielo has got this covered however, serving the best latte in Leeds city centre (according to James – so it must be true.) I’m not a coffee drinker (I hate the stuff) but I do like peppermint tea and some fruity ones. Cielo has a good range of loose herbal teas; I tried their Suki “Apple Loves Mint” tea on a previous visit and it was really lovely.

I had a Cielo hot chocolate for the first time this week – the weather has been so cold recently, so a hot chocolate seemed like the obvious choice. Cielo’s hot chocolate is creamy and delicious. After my first sip, I regretted going for a regular instead of a large!

I also really like the cups they serve the drinks in! (My birthday’s coming up – just saying.)

If you’re after a chilled atmosphere, in need of a good cuppa, and want to go somewhere that’s supporting the community, Cielo is definitely a good choice. Social enterprises serving quality products – another great thing about Leeds.
